A response to the tragedy in Las Vegas.

It’s @spicetolife ’s turn to write the “Prayer Prompt” for a virtual group of River Women. Below is what she wrote.
(Weekly gals take turns writing a short devotional so that we get to know God’s Word and each other and grow in community. If you’re not part of this text group (in iOS), message @lynwoodruff.)

Sunday afternoon I wrote a prayer prompt for Monday morning. It was cued ready to send out first thing.
And then, I woke up and read what has transpired in Las Vegas. My prayer prompt no longer fit.
All day I have been asking the Lord for an alternative to share with you my sisters at The River Church.

Psalm 116: 5-9

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.

Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;

I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

These senseless tragedies happen regularly on our planet,
far away;
or nearby, affecting us personally.

And when it does, humankind created by our Father in heaven
will always ask:

“Why God? How could you let this happen.”

Do you have an answer?

Why?
Because he loves us, we are free to follow righteousness or evil.
To worship him, or…not.

Why?
Because some — no most of us — have chosen evil.
He cannot force us to choose righteousness.

When these things happen, it is a reminder of his grace:

Be amazed that it doesn’t happen MORE.

Be amazed that in the midst of such an evil world,
we don’t all have to live in mayhem as a way of life.
(Though some in other countries do.)

While we are in the “Land of the living,”
(before the best and eternal part of life)
our earth is temporarily ruled by forces of darkness intent on destroying us.
We are a generation has grown up rehearsing hours a week of such violence with movies and TV and gaming.

How indeed, does this kind of mayhem not happen more?
As we grieve today, dear friends, let’s remember Psalm 116.

“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.”

The River Hopes: Let's Get this Party Started.

Unstuck. It’s been almost three years. My husband and I came back from living and serving overseas in the fall of 2014. It was supposed to be only a year, but God had other plans as our parents health declined. Jim figured out how to make continued ministry to pastors in Asia work…commuting.  I’ve been finding ways to be useful, and knowing the Lord has things to teach me in transition. But, last December a handful of  The River  women prayed after church about how we could pitch in with the Refugee crisis... and... something started brewing: "The River Hopes" In January Pastor Todd invited some folks together to talk about our direction regarding outreach as a church. We know  the church is individual believers in community , and not just those few who happened to make it to an evening meeting, so... The consensus was that we should have a better grasp of  what we’re already doing  before we decide where we should concentrate moving fo...

23rd Day of Lent: Seeing God's Heart of Cosmic Generosity in Creation

When you hear the word generosity,  what is your first impulse?   Is it to think of  generosity as a finite  "how much"  question?  "How much" do I need to give? Or how much should I give to be (come) a generous person?  God never asks "how much!" Instead, He models extravagant, infinite, continuous cosmic generosity-  It is on display everywhere in His visible creation. Take a moment and ponder the universe.   In our galaxy there are 100,000 million stars, like our sun.  Our galaxy is one of 100,000 million galaxies.   There are 25,000 varieties of orchids.   And The orchid is just one of 270,000 species of flowers.   God does not do things by halves.  He multiplies-  (like the fish and loaves, the land overflowing with milk and honey,  and the daily manna and quail). This should disabuse us of the way we might ...

Prayer Walking

This short video points out three helpful insights when trying on the Spiritual Discipline of Prayer Walking: https://youtu.be/itA74C4BtuU 1. Find out about your community/neighborhood/ school's history A. What are its gifts/legacies? B. What needs to be redeemed? 2. Pray and ask God for revelation about what God wants you to know more about your community/neighborhood/schools. 3. Pray and ask God to open your eyes to strongholds in the community, and how to fill the empty spaces and bless the community/neighborhood/schools. As we continue to "walk out" our lives with daring faith, Jesus will be right beside us, holding our hands, reminding us that "what is impossible with men is possible with God." Lk 18:27. Lent is the time to remember that Jesus turned crucifixions into resurrections. He specializes in the impossible! ✨✨✨ And nothing is too big to prayer walk for, and redeem and bless in our neighborhoods/communities/schools......
